The Cannes Film Festival — famous for its alleged unwritten rule that women must wear heels on the red carpet — is cracking down on men this year.
Vogue writer Zach Weiss was spotted being turned away from the black-tie opening night ceremony featuring Johnny Depp’s new film “Jeanne Du Barry,” at the Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière, for wearing a colorful jacquard jacket by Jay Kos.
The garment was pink with gold embroidery.
“It must be noir, both the jacket and the shoes,” an official was overheard telling Weiss. The fest official added, “Too colorful.”
We hear Weiss was able to pull things together in record time — with an assist from a nearby Giorgio Armani — and made it into the premiere in a black jacket.
Cannes has long had strict rules about dress.
In 1960, “Tropic of Cancer” author Henry Miller was a juror for the festival, but was not allowed inside the opening night because he refused to wear a dinner jacket.
In 2015, a group of women in their 50s were reportedly turned away for wearing “rhinestone flats,” due to medical conditions that prevented them from wearing stilettos.
It caused such a stir that festival head Thierry Fremaux took to Twitter, stating, “The rumor that the festival requires high heels for the women on the steps is baseless.”
Actress Emily Blunt said at the time, “We shouldn’t wear high heels, anyway. I prefer wearing Converse sneakers.”
In 2018, actress Kristen Stewart, who was serving as a juror, took her shoes off completely on the red carpet.
Earlier she’d told the Hollywood Reporter, “There’s definitely a distinct dress code, right? People get very upset if you don’t wear heels or whatever.”
She added, “I feel like you can’t ask people that any more — it’s a given. If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me either.”
The festival site states that for screenings at the main theater, “You should arrive at the foot of the red steps wearing a dinner jacket or evening dress.”
The fest has also been known for giving guys a hard time for not wearing a proper bow tie with their tuxes to the red carpet premieres.
“In the absence of this, you may wear a cocktail dress, a dark trouser suit, a dressy top with black trousers, a “little black dress,” a black or midnight blue suit with a bow tie. Elegant shoes, with or without heels, are required (no trainers),” the policy states.
A rep for the fest did not return request for comment.
