A royal favorite from the ’90s is back.
Princess Diana’s blue satin mini “Lady Dior” handbag she carried to the 1996 Met Gala will be reissued for a limited run, the French fashion house announced today.
The bag — which is priced at €5,000 (about $5,180) and available exclusively in Dior boutiques — was created especially for the late Princess of Wales to carry to her one-and-only Met Gala appearance, which was themed to celebrate Christian Dior’s impact on fashion.
Wearing a navy slip dress with lace trim by John Galliano, who was the newly appointed creative director of Dior at the time, the princess carried a blue satin bag which was designed as a smaller version of her favored black quilted Dior bag — but the story doesn’t end there.
According to Dior, Princess Diana fell in love with the style when the First Lady of France at the time, Madame Bernadette Chirac, gifted her with its “Chouchou” bag in 1995.
When she was photographed carrying the style on multiple occasions, the fashion house renamed the bag the “Lady Dior” as a play on Lady Diana.
The iconic bag has been a part of Dior’s history for decades and is available in a rainbow of colors and various sizes, ranging from the “Mini” style ($5,300) to Diana’s original medium bag ($6,100) or a small crossbody with a fun, personalized strap ($5,600).
The late princess isn’t the only fan of the “Lady Dior” style; the bag has been carried by many famous faces including Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Paris Hilton, Mary-Kate Olsen and Emmy Rossum.
As for the reissued style, fashion fans should act fast — the French brand is only creating a limited edition batch of 200 before the navy satin is sent back into royal retirement.
