Meghan Markle to be given 2023 Women of Vision award by Gloria Steinem

Meghan Markle is set to receive the 2023 Women of Vision award from famed feminist Gloria Steinem next month.

The Duchess of Sussex’s “global advocacy to empower and advocate on behalf of women and girls” has earned her the flashy new gong at the May 16 ceremony in NYC.

The award — bestowed by the Ms. Foundation, a Brooklyn-based organization that “works to bring attention to the real challenges facing women, especially women of color and low-income women who are living in poverty” — notes that Markle is a “feminist, champion of human rights and gender equity and global role model.”

Steinem, a “founding mother” of the Ms. Foundation, is set to present the duchess with the award at the flashy gala.

“We are thrilled to announce this year’s honorees for the Women of Vision Awards and to celebrate 50 years of progress and power,” Teresa C. Younger, president, and CEO of the Ms. Foundation, said in a statement.

Younger added that the duchess, as well as the other award winners “are incredible leaders, and we are grateful to be able to shine a light on their many accomplishments and tireless work on behalf of gender and racial equity across the country and the world.”

Other recipients include Wanda Irving, the co-founder of Dr. Shalon’s Maternal Action Project; Kimberly Inez McGuire, the executive director of URGE; and LaTosha Brown, political strategist and co-founder of Black Voters Matter.

“Meghan, LaTosha, Wanda, Kimberly, Olivia, and Rebekah are incredible leaders and we are grateful to be able to shine a light on their many accomplishments and tireless work on behalf of gender and racial equity across the country and the world,” Younger added.

Markle and Steinem, who both reside in Montecito, California, built their unlikely friendship during quarantine in 2020.

Their unlikely friendship blossomed when the duchess reached out to the 89-year-old to see if she wanted to join forces in making thank-you calls to voting registration organizers, according to Vogue.

“I’m not an expert on the media, but it seems to me that she is different from the picture of her in the media,” Steinem told People of Markle in 2022. “She’s smart and funny and devoted to social issues.”

Markle is set to accept the award only 10 days after King Charles’ coronation, which takes place on May 6.

The Sussexes have not yet made it clear if they will make the 5,459-mile-long trip from their Montecito, Calif. home to London.
